Space, freedom, escape from the everyday, and thrilling sensations at sea… the purchase of a boat is often the promise of realizing a dream, and a step toward living a more fulfilling life. But, before purchasing a catamaran, you must first ask yourself a very down-to-earth question: how much does it really cost?
What is the real price of a catamaran, new or preowned? How much should you expect to pay to acquire a multihull adapted to your plans?
In this article, we discuss in detail what goes into the cost of a catamaran. Between the various dimensions, brands, technical options, and additional fees… price differences can be significant.
Factors in the Price of a New Catamaran
The price of a catamaran frequently varies from one model to the next. But do you know what determines the price of a new catamaran? Below, we discuss the various elements that come into play.
Size
The first factor determining the price of a new catamaran is rather obvious: the size, or the interior volume of the boat. Furthermore, that is what explains the price difference between a monohull and a multihull of equal lengths: generally, the more hulls, equipment, and furnishings there are, the higher the cost of construction!
Between two catamarans, it is the same: the longer catamaran, with greater deck surface area or with more spacious interior and exterior living areas, often requires a greater investment.
Use and Equipment
The price of a multihull also depends on adaptations for cruising plans, its configuration, and its layouts. A small catamaran designed for a day sail along the coast is not at all the same, in terms of budget, as a catamaran designed for sailing around the world.
The price of a boat depends on the number of cabins, performance of the sails and rigging… but also on equipment installed for more autonomous sailing (solar panels, hydrogenerator, watermaker…), and whether the interior configuration is personalized or not.
Most of the time, the greater the safety, performance, and level of comfort on board, the higher the price of the catamaran.
Design, Materials, and Construction
Behind every catamaran, there are defining decisions made by the shipyard. Aboard boats, this can be felt: the work of renowned naval architects and designers, the use of strong but lightweight materials, a polished fit and finish, and meticulous care in construction all impact the price of a catamaran, and rightly so. Often, these are gauges of quality!
The price of luxury catamarans is often justified by the use of fine materials in construction.
From this perspective, we understand that the price of a sporty catamaran – designed for sailing single- or double-handed for a few hours in a coastal zone – and the price of a livable catamaran – adapted for offshore cruising with family, for example – are not the same.
Price Range for a New Catamaran
So, how much does a new catamaran, ready to cruise, cost? Concretely:
For a catamaran from 38 to 40 feet: between 350,000€ and 600,000€, excluding taxes.
For a model between 40 and 42 feet: between 500,000€ HT and 750,000€, excluding taxes.
For a catamaran from 42 to 44 feet: between 650,000€ HT and 950,000€, excluding taxes.
For catamarans measuring 50 feet and up: starting at a million euros.
“With catamarans from eleven to fifteen meters in length, Excess forges new paths for reaching young sailors and those who remain young at heart, for whom great seaworthy qualities and an affordable price are more important than speed and luxury.”

The Price of a Pre-Owned Catamaran
On the market, in addition to new catamarans, there are also many preowned catamarans. Often, they are more affordable!
In addition to the factors that determine the price of a new catamaran, we advise you to take other elements into account:
Age of the catamaran: a model that is five, ten, or fifteen years old, for example, will have a lower value than a boat that left the shipyard just a few months ago and has not sailed much.
Condition of the boat: according to prior use, care taken, and notably, regular maintenance, the value of a catamaran can be preserved, or in contrast, diminished.
Rarity of the model: the price of a pre-owned catamaran can be higher if there are no other similar models available on the market.
Location: in function with the popularity of the cruising region where the catamaran is located, with demand, and whether access is easy or not…
Generally, the more recent, well maintained, and well equipped a catamaran is, the closer its price will be to that of a new catamaran. And this rule holds true for all boats!
The Excess 11 is offered in a 3-cabin or a 4-cabin version, with more or less sailing experience. Prices listed range from 310,000€ to 455,000€, excluding taxes.
The pre-owned Excess 14 starts at 400,000€, excluding taxes – but also at a price of 600,000€, excluding taxes.
Older models, such as the Excess 12 and Excess 15 catamarans, are also available: among featured listings on the same website, in July of 2025, a 38-foot catamaran cost 322,000€, excluding taxes, and you could purchase a 48-foot catamaran for 870,000€, excluding taxes.
Differences in Catamaran Pricing: A Question of Positioning
It is difficult to establish a price comparison for new or pre-owned catamarans: they are too numerous on the market, and too diverse! From one shipyard to another, differences in style and positioning are also very significant.
Choosing an Excess Catamaran
For modern sailors, the young at heart, and lovers of thrilling sensations, Excess has conceived catamarans that focus on the pursuit and enjoyment of sailing, above all. Sensations are at the heart of the experience: we offer owners the thrill of a reactive helm, sailing pleasure, and a deeply satisfying experience of the sea.
Aboard an Excess 11, Excess 13, or Excess 14 catamaran, sailing is light, energetic, filled with excitement… with nearly the same intensity as aboard a monohull sailboat!
All Excess models are well adapted for extended, sporty sailing without being too heavily equipped. The design of Excess catamarans is well considered, featuring true living areas.
Excess owners form a community that wants to feel alive, to reconnect with their feelings, with their passions, and with freedom: it is the Excess Family.
“What is really interesting about Excess, it’s also the people who make up the crew – from the shipyard, the sales team – and events created with the Excess family. For us, it is a wonderful discovery. […] The Excess ecosystem is very motivating, very enriching, and keeps you wanting more.”
Fees in Addition to the Purchase Price of a Catamaran
The purchase of a new or pre-owned catamaran is the first step. Then, there are fees related to commissioning and ownership:
Commissioning Costs for a Catamaran
The list price for a new catamaran does not always correspond with the total cost of commissioning: additional costs may apply once the boat has been delivered!
These additional costs may include:
Delivery of the catamaran from the shipyard to its destined port: by sea or by land, with the assistance of one or more specialized service providers. The cost of delivery can reach up to several thousand euros, depending on the distance covered and the method of transport chosen.
Installation of additional equipment: additional electronic appliances, energy production equipment, upholstery, a new anchoring system…
The tally of costs for services may vary from one project to another, according to the boat, the situation, and the cruising region. It is common to spend from 10 to 20 percent of the price of a catamaran on these additional costs!
In accordance with the flag chosen, there may also be legal and fiscal costs: registration fees and value-added taxes, local taxes, or certain certification fees – notably for the right to charter the boat.
The Maintenance Budget for a Catamaran
Prior to purchase, you should also plan for common and recurring costs such as for maintenance, insurance, mooring or dry storage, and handling:
Regular Maintenance
A catamaran requires maintenance throughout its lifetime: hull maintenance, engine service, electronics updates, rigging tuning…
The annual maintenance budget for engines on a catamaran, for example, is about 1,500€, excluding taxes, per year. For handling and haul-out service, you should expect costs of between 1,000€ and 4,000€, excluding taxes, each year.
Insurance Fees
These depend on the owner, the value of the boat, the cruising plans and region. For an Excess catamaran, you should generally count between 3,000€ and 6,000€, excluding taxes, in insurance fees per year, for private use of the boat with full insurance coverage. It is possible to obtain the best rates by opting for special financing.
Slips or Dry Storage and Handling
Prices vary in function with the location, the conditions, and the services offered.
For a slip in France and in the Mediterranean, for example, you should expect:
About 15,000€, excluding taxes, per year for an Excess 11 catamaran;
About 18,000€, excluding taxes, per year for an Excess 13 catamaran;
About 20,000€, excluding taxes, per year for an Excess 14 catamaran.
